First surgery in Germany with the OPRA™ implant system
For the first time a patient in Germany has undergone surgery with Integrum’s OPRA bone anchored implant system. The surgery was carried out at University Medical Center in Göttingen.
The 55-year-old patient lost his right arm in a work-related accident 14 years ago. Although fitted with an assistive device, the patient only occasionally used the arm prosthesis and eventually not at all. Looking for alternatives the patient decided to get an OPRA implant. In the surgery, the bone anchored OPRA implant was combined with a new procedure, “Targeted Muscle Reinnervation”, (TMR) where "unemployed" nerve stumps are transferred to remaining muscles of the residual limb. The combination of bone anchored OPRA implant and TMR increases the comfort of the prosthesis, reduces phantom limb pain and offers completely new options for mind controlled prosthetic devices in the future.
