The first US surgery has successfully been performed at UCSF

UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco is the first U.S. center to proceed with an OPRA program. This unique program gives amputees new hope for better prosthesis.

The historic first U.S. surgery with the Integrum OPRA System took place last week. The patient receiving the implant is a 54-year-old man who lost most of his right leg due to a tumor and since then has tried several external socket prostheses without success.

Overseeing the patient tumor treatment was Richard J. O’Donnell, MD, professor of clinical orthopaedic surgery and chief of the Orthopaedic Oncology Service at UCSF Medical Center. Seeing the challenges with a standard device, O’Donnell suggested a revolutionary approach – the Osseoanchored Prosthesis for the Rehabilitation of Amputees (OPRA) developed by Rickard Brånemark, MD, PhD, MSc, a visiting associate professor of orthopaedic surgery.
