Phantom limb pain treatment

Control phantom
limb pain with Neuromotus™

Our new, innovative technology, Neuromotus™, allows physiotherapists to help amputees to reduce phantom limb pain by taking control of it - literally.

Neuromotus™ is the only technology in the world based on Phantom Motor Execution. This therapy allows patients to control their phantom limb pain by activating muscles on their stump and eventually controlling their phantom limb.

This technology has shown a significant reduction of phantom limb pain in patients for whom no other treatment worked previously.

This is Neuromotus™

A new innovative technology developed by Integrum, used for therapy to reduce phantom limb pain after an amputation.

  • Non-invasive, smart electronic device that captures, processes, and decodes myoelectric signals to infer limb movements. Electrodes placed over the skin are used to capture muscular activity.
  • The decoded phantom limb movements are visualized with a virtual limb on the screen connected to Neuromotus™, providing real-time feedback to the user.
  • It is a tool to promote motor execution of the affected limb. Depending on the patient’s condition, the physician/therapist can use it for neuromuscular rehabilitation and pathological pain treatment.

A clinical study of Neuromotus™ showed 50% pain reduction, 50% less intrusion of Phantom Limb Pain in sleep 50% reduction in pain management medication. Registered effect still after six months.

“My husband can live 10 years more than I expected, as pain now plays a less important role in his life, and those close to him can see it.”

Who can use Neuromotus™?

Neuromotus™ can be used by physiotherapists to help patients reduce phantom limb pain. The device is easy to use, and our physiotherapist at Integrum will help you get started with personal training if needed. Neuromotus™ can also be used directly by the patient in consultation with the therapist.

  • For clinics, Neuromotus™ is an opportunity to invest in tomorrow’s innovative technology. For therapists, it’s a unique tool to help their patients take control of their pain and get a long-lasting improvement/reduction in pain.
  • And for amputees suffering from phantom limb pain, for whom no other treatment worked before, it’s an amazing chance to get their quality of life back.
  • Several treatments based on virtual and augmented reality, as well as mirror therapy, available on the market, require a healthy limb, unlike Neuromotus™.
  • Upper limb, lower limb, and bilateral amputees can use this treatment, provided residual muscle activity.

How does it work?

Neuromotus™ employs Augmented Reality and Machine Learning in a new way to treat phantom limb pain. Surface electrodes are placed on the stump along with a marker to provide information on motion intention and virtual limb location, respectively.

  • Electrical muscle signals are sensed by the electrodes and decoded into movements by complex algorithms using artificial intelligence (AI).
  • The patient can see themself on a screen, with a superimposed virtual limb, controlled using their own neural command in real-time.
  • After 12 phantom motor execution therapy sessions, clinical studies showed that patients showed significant and clinically meaningful reductions in severity and frequency of phantom limb pain.

Clinical Evidence

A recent single-group clinical trial has shown that Neuromotus™ reduced phantom limb pain by approximately 50% in chronic intractable sufferers. – –

  • These patients had previously tried several clinically available treatments for an average of 10 years and experienced no relief.
  • At the last treatment session with Neuromotus™, improvements were still observable in intensity, frequency, duration, and pain quality, indicating that more treatment sessions might further reduce pain.
  • Furthermore, the improvements achieved with Neuromotus™ were still observable six months after treatment.

What is Phantom Limb Pain?

Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) is a common problem among amputees and can considerably affect their quality of life.

  • Studies suggest that up to 80 percent of amputees develop PLP, and one-third of these are extremely bothered by it.
  • Unfortunately, conventional therapies for treating phantom limb pain (e.g. mirror therapy, motor imagery, TENS) fall short of successfully treating this condition.
  • Integrum has therefore developed a new system for effectively treating PLP — Neuromotus™.
