This is his story

The OPRA™ Implant System is an innovative method allowing the direct connection of an artificial limb to the skeleton. The prosthesies is firmly attached through a quick connection, which lets your prosthesis become a true extension of your body and mind, controlled by you. The system is available for both upper and lower limbs, and has given hundreds of amputees from all over the world the ability to once again enjoy what most people take for granted – ordinary, wonderful, daily stuff like free movement or feeling the ground you are walking on.

What is OPRA™ Implant System?

The OPRA™ Implant System is a bone anchored prostheses system based on osseointegration, where the prostheses are directly attached to the bone and therefore avoiding the use of socket. The system consists of three parts; an anchoring element (the Fixture) and a skin penetrating connection (the Abutment), secured with a screw (the Abutment Screw). The unique design ensures protection of the patient by avoiding bone fractures from accidental loads. The system has been used by hundreds of amputees since the world’s first surgery in 1990, and has been proven in several clinical studies.

How does it work?

The OPRA™ fixture is coated with a new surface technology, BioHelix™, that has been developed by Integrum after 15 years of research and clinical testing. The surface will take osseointegration to the next level and promote faster, stronger attachment to the bone, thereby increasing the strength of the bone-to-implant interface. The prosthesis is connected to the OPRA™ Implant System using a connection, load controlling device. Integrum has developed specific components each customized for different indications levels, including both upper and lower limb.

The OPRA™ Implant System components are implanted during one or two stage surgeries. The first surgery with the OPRA™ Implant System was performed in 1990 by Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark and Professor Björn Rydevik and over the coming almost 30 years, more than 500 surgeries have been performed in fourteen countries. Clinical studies show that the surgery significantly improves the quality of life for amputees.

Who can use OPRA™?

The OPRA™ Implant System is indicated for patients who have undergone amputation due to trauma or cancer and who have rehabilitation problems with or cannot use a conventional socket prosthesis. Rehabilitation problems may include:

  • Recurrent (repeated) skin infections and ulcerations (skin sores) in the socket contact area
  • Pain
  • A short stump preventing the use of socket prosthesis
  • Volume fluctuation (size change) in the stump
  • Soft tissue scarring
  • Extensive (large) area of skin grafting
  • Socket retention problems (problems keeping the socket in place) due to excessive perspiration (sweating)
  • Restricted mobility (cannot move fully)
