What is the OPRA™ Implant System?
The OPRA™ Implant System is a bone-anchored prosthesis system based on osseointegration, where the prosthesis is directly attached to the bone and avoids the use of a socket.
- The system consists of three parts: an anchoring element (the Fixture) and a skin penetrating connection (the Abutment), secured with a screw (the Abutment Screw).
- The unique design is designed to help protect the patient in an effort to avoid bone fractures from accidental loads.
- The system has been used by hundreds of amputees since the world’s first surgery in 1990 and has been proven in multiple clinical studies.
How does it work?
The OPRA™ Fixture is treated with an innovative surface technology, BioHelix™, that was developed by Integrum after 15 years of research and clinical testing. The surface takes osseointegration to the next level and promotes faster, stronger attachment to the bone, thereby increasing the strength of the bone-to-implant interface.
The prosthesis is connected to the OPRA™ Implant System using a load controlling connector device. Integrum has developed specific components each customized for different indications levels, including both upper and lower limb.
Benefits of the OPRA™ Implant System
- Elimination of Socket Related Problems1
- Skin irritations, ulcers and perspiration caused by socket – all eliminated
- Allows volume fluctuation and weight gain/loss
- Greater comfort during sitting
- Enhanced Proprioception & Osseoperception2
- Intuitive awareness of limb positioning in space
- Increased sense of feel through the prosthesis
- Increased Range of Motion and Limb Strength3
- Wear time and daily steps increase
- Improved force production in residuum
- Ease of Prosthetic Attachment and Detachment4
Bone-anchored Prosthetics
The science behind bone-anchored prosthetics is powered by the principles of osseointegration. Osseointegration relates to the ability for certain implant materials to interact with bone in a way that produces a solid fixation between the implant and the patient’s bone.
The entire field of osseointegration was established by the pioneering work of Professor P. I. Brånemark, who in 1962 identified complete titanium integration into bone while studying microcirculation in the bone of an animal model. Over the past 50 years, this discovery has led to new treatments and entirely new fields of medicine. The impact of osseointegration has helped millions of individuals with the technology applied both to restoration of teeth by way of the modern dental implant and the bone-anchored hearing aid.
Professor P. I. Brånemark and Professor B. Rydevik performed the first surgery in 1990, rehabilitating a female transfemoral amputee who had been unable to use a traditional socket prosthesis. Dr. Rickard Brånemark, orthopaedic surgeon and Integrum’s founder, expanded upon his father’s pioneering work and applied the principles of osseointegration to rehabilitation for transfemoral amputees.

“The other prosthesis ruled my life, it was my master in a way, it’s inevitable… it affected my mood and my interest in doing things that I knew would demand an extra effort. You had to weigh the pros and cons, and that’s all gone now. Now it’s actually me…I am in command and not the left leg (socket prosthesis) and that’s a big difference. ”
