Milestones in Amputation Care at University Medical Center Göttingen
University Medicine Göttingen(UMG) positions itself at the forefront of orthopedic surgery in Germany with the completion of its first Osseointegrated and Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) surgery last year.
Osseointegration for amputees refers to the anchoring the prosthesis directly through the bone. This treatment is becoming a widely acceptable and beneficial alternative for those who have problems with their socket prosthesis. Targeted Muscle Reinnervation surgery refers to the transfer of unused nerves to the remaining muscles of the residual limb. TMR in combination with Osseointegaration allows for increased comfort, more freedom of movement with the prosthesis while TMR allows intuitive control of the prosthesis.
In November 2019, German-based broadcasters NDR.de aired an interview with the first patient to be treated with Osseointegration and TMR at UMG. The 55 year old patient lost his arm in a work related-accident 14 years ago. Dissatisfied with his arm prosthesis, his search for alternatives led him to OPRA Implant System. Watch the video here.

UMG is on its way to becoming the first certified center in Germany for osseointegration with the OPRA Implant System. In conjunction with this, UMG will host a multidisciplinary course –Treatment of Foot and Ankle Surgeries on the 21st’ February where Dr. Rickard Brånemark will talk about Osseointegration, the state of the art and advances in the field.
Clinic for Trauma Surgery, Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery
The Osseointegration team at UMG is a subsidiary of the Clinic for Trauma Surgery, Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery headed by Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Lehmann. UMG hosts weekly outpatient clinics at Interdisciplinary Outpatient Clinic for Amputation Medicine to evaluate patients for the procedure.
