Munya Mahiya, a UC Berkeley Alumnus and a wheelchair basketball player for the Golden State Road Warriors, has recently shared his story and postoperative experience with the OPRA™ Implant System on WMC Action News 5.

The OPRA Implant system is a bone-anchored prosthesis system that allows the prosthesis to be skeletally attached to the bone. The system provides several advantages for people with amputations, specifically for those with socket problems. An osseointegrated system allows users prolonged prosthesis wear without socket pain, sores, and improves range of motion.

“I’d say, it’s amazing. I used to use the socket prosthetic. I couldn’t sit in it for a long time. It would just pop off,” Munya continued, “I have better control of my prosthetic because it’s like now connected to my skeletal frame.”

“[Osseointegration] allows the patient to walk much better and much more comfortably,” Munya’s attending physician, Richard J O’Donnell, MD, Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery, UCSF, said.
